For an entertaining and well-written book that's suited for the casual reader, Waldemar Hansen's The Peacock Throne: The Drama of Mogul India is a classic. It reads like a novel, even though it is non-fiction. Bamber Gascoigne's A Brief History of the Great Moghuls is another good choice, and offers a concise introduction to Mughal history for the beginner. If you want a more formal, scholarly introduction that's still fairly easy to read, I recommend John Richard's The Mughal Empire, which was included in the The New Cambridge History of India (which is not a book, but rather a series of books). This is my personal favorite when it comes to introductory texts on Mughal history.
