It can depend on what period and focus in history is of interest. Studying the history of the first century church would call for reading the Greek New Testament and the Septuagint (which was their translation of the scriptures of the Tanakh). Studying the history of the Catholic church calls for knowing Latin and a familiarity with the Latin Vulgate. A study of the history of Protestantism is not harmed by a familiarity with the King James version.
But in general, any decent translation into your language that makes the text understandable is good enough. Establishing the habit of reading secondary literature that focuses on the historical contexts of the texts of the Bible is probably more important for your historical interests than what translation you choose.
