Some say slavery, some say states' rights. What's the truth of the matter? Was Lincoln a pure pragmatist who really thought "if not freeing the slaves saves the union, I'd keep it, if freeing them saves the union, I'd do that too"? Or did people consciously think about "Confederate = Bad because slavery?"
