Under the Napoleonic code of 1810, people guilty of theft were condemned to death if all the following aggravating circumstances applied: crime committed by night; by two or more people; if the thieves had weapons; if the crime was committed.

If only two of these circumstances applied, the thief was condemned to perpetual hard labour.

Hard labour was also inflicted to any perpetrators of this crime committed with violence.

If theft was carried out towards family member, the involved parties had only to go through civil reparations.
