In so many movies with bank robberies the villain tries to escape by negotiating for access to an airplane in exchange for freeing hostages. Where does this concept originate? Has it ever been done successfully in real life?

Essentially this guy “Dan Cooper” went to the Portland airport in attempt to hijack the plane and rob all of the passengers using what he described as a bomb in his briefcase. In a note passed to the stewardess, he wanted 200k and 4 parachutes in exchange for the passengers of the plane once it arrived in Seattle. The exchange went on without a hitch and somewhere between Seattle and Reno, the man parachuted off the plane and was never found.
