Did they see it as a slap in the face? Or had their relationship with Western Europe already faded to the point where they saw it as laughable, or illegitimate?
Hello! Sorry this is so late, but I just answered a similar question - basically, to the extent they paid any attention to it at all, they seemed to think it was an interesting opportunity to restore the western half of the old empire.
