Tamworth was an important Anglo-Saxon centre - it was after all a Mercian capital - but it wasn't the the biggest town in the medieval West Midlands. Following its reconstruction in 907, Chester boomed rapidly to become one of the most important and prosperous cities in Anglo-Saxon England, and indeed in the early 10th century, Chester's moneyers were producing a far higher output than even London.
