In accounts of Operation Barbarossa, it's usually mentioned that the Soviets were able to evacuate key industries East, often behind the Urals. However, obviously this effort wouldn't have been 100% successful - the giant Dnieper dams for example could not be evacuated and instead were blown up
Do we know how much Soviet industrial capacity was lost during Operation Barbarossa, either captured by the Germans or destroyed to prevent capture?
Soviet GDP in 1942 was 65.7% of its 1940 value, according to the calculations of Mark Harrison. Household consumption was about 60% of its (already quite low) pre-war value. Even more serious than the loss in industrial capacity was the reduction in agricultural produce, from 95.5 million tonnes of grain to 29.7 million tonnes.
By 1944 GDP had rebounded to 86.8% of its starting value (and about 80% that of Germany at the time), and it wasn't until 1945 that Soviet GDP exceeded Germany's.
