Were there societies or communities that had a sustained tradition of contact or commerce with fairies, goblins or any supernatural beings? If there were any rituals involving them, how did these develop and why?

Is it at all possible that they were relics of ideas about contact with other hominids?

Did supernatural/fantastical entities fade slowly out of the lore of civilization, or were there some cultures with a starker ending to these myths? I.e. Trailblazing scholars or public figures who gained a following by rationally disconfirming the existence of such entities. If so, what was the public reaction to this?
