During the 1800s, a lot of people moved out to the frontiers to start a new life and seek opportunity. Some established towns and cities, but others isolated themselves into distant woods and mountains. How did these people know what was going on outside their homesteads? Were they completely isolated, or did they rely on some forms of social interaction to survive?
Depends on the type of recluse.
The one that is completely self reliant rarely has a connection to the outside world. They enjoy nature and being alone. They might mosey on down to the town once in a while to visit a tavern (most common place to learn the news with it being a central hub for travelers.)
The one that visits the town regularly might be aware of current events and check up on purpose.
