There was much talk and publicity among Texas freedmen about going to colonies that were to be formed in Kansas. Interestingly, there were black leaders on both sides of the question.

In the archives of The Colorado County Citizen (a newspaper in a county with over 40% population of freedmen) between 1867-1872, in the papers of an official of the Loyal Union League at UT’s Briscoe Center, and even in the papers of Texas Governor EJ Davis there is mention of black immigration to Kansas colonies of freedmen.

While I have passed by and read through letters, articles, and a few advertisements about this, because my research concerns aren’t related to those efforts, I’ve largely just read this information and passed it by, thus I can’t speak to what specific areas in Kansas they may have referred to—only to the frequent mention of the same in Texas primary sources.
