During Sweden’s brief colonial foray into the new world in present day New Jersey and Delaware was there any set policy about trading and alliances with the Native American inhabitants? Did the swedish forts offer something better than the Dutch?
Related to this topic, a few years there was an article in a Finnish science magazine about the relationship between Native Americans and Finns. Back in the 17th century, Finland was part of Sweden and Finnish settlers accompanied the Swedes who crossed the ocean.
The article claims that the Finns got along famously with the natives. This was largely due to the similarities between the people. Both were simple folks with deep ties to forest and nature. Both relied on folk magic. Both liked to drink and bathe in a sauna/sweat lodge.
Many Europeans, the Swedes included, were more used to regimented city life, the Finns enjoyed wilderness and were there to make a living, not to conquer lands.
The article claims that Delaware indians started to build a 'Big House', a large log cabin they modelled after Finnish houses.
Even these days, there are a number of Findians, people of Native and Finnish descent.
