During the time that believing in Witchcraft was heretical, did anyone take it upon themselves to still become a witch-hunter? Following the old adage of "if there's a law against it, it's common practice" (sodomy amongst monks, belief in witchcraft..)

By this I mean that - as hunting and killing witches was not only considered heretical but illegal and a normal murder, presumably there are a few cases of it happening. Do we know of these?
