Following reunification many of the former East Germans lived more or less normal lives, however some faced criminal charges in the now unified Germany based on I’d they had committed crimes that were illegal in former East Germany.

Egon Krenz was the General Secretary of the GDR between October 1989 and early December 1989. Following the reunification he was charged for the manslaughter of four East Berliners that attempted to escape over the Berlin Wall and electoral fraud, subsequently he went to prison. Today he lives a more or less normal life in modern Germany.

Erich Mielke was the head of the Stasi from 1957 until 1989, however he wasn’t prosecuted for his crimes in East Germany, he was sentenced for his involvement of the assassination of two politicians in 1931.

As for non-officials (ordinary Stasi informants) the vast majority of them faced no charges and just lived ordinary lives. Provided that they didn’t commit any crimes under GDR laws, they didn’t faced any legal consequences for their actions done in the East German regime.
