Was it an inevitably that a new province would have eventually been formed? Or did Nunavut only come to exist because of specific pressure applied by activists?
Similarly, was specific activism responsible for the naming of the province and renaming of its capital city?
This is not an adequate answer to your question—unfortunately I don’t know a great deal about this topic—but it’s worth mentioning that Nunavut is a territory, not a province. Territories and provinces are quite distinct in the Canadian legal system; notably, provinces have greater autonomy and powers.
