What do you mean exactly? Like what did they think they were made of?

CS Lewis wrote a book called The Discarded Image that lays out the pre-Galilean understanding of the universe. It’s got some problems (most notably he didn’t really cite anything), but it’s a very enjoyable read. I don’t recall that he goes into literally what people thought the materials of the universe were, though.
