Do we have evidence that pre-language societies developed hand gestures (like American Sign Langauge) to faciliate complex communication? Are there societies that developed complex non-verbal languages in place of what linguists typically describe as language?

I would recommend posting this question in r/linguistics and/or r/AskAnthropology. Not to dissuade anyone from answering your question if they are able to, but while r/AskHistorians has six Historical Linguistics flairs, this particular question is heavily rooted in a prehistorical context and additionally will be difficult to answer without dipping into some current observable cultures with unique non-verbal language characteristics (which cannot be done here due to the 20-year-rule).
