Hello! This is what my undergraduate research is about. So, technically the military wasn’t desegregated until 1948 by Harry Truman. Before desegregation the military was segregated, but black platoons would sometimes be assigned to white companies. There was some intermixing, but it was mostly kept segregated. The U.S military made it extremely difficult for black men to enlist, and once they were enlisted they were often sent to camps that did not nearly prepare them for war as well as the white camps did. These camps also had harsh conditions and no amenities similar to that of the white camps. Harassment was often overlooked. People of color suffered great injustices as the hands of the U.S military’s justice system. Black soldiers were sometimes given years of prison labor for talking back to a white officer, whereas white soldiers would receive a fraction of the punishment, or none at all. However, this irony of fighting for a fair democracy abroad when there was clearly no justice at home did not deter many black men. Many still died for their country and worked over obstacles to be given the opportunity to serve.

If you are interested there are really amazing archives of black newspapers from these eras. The Chicago Defender, Pittsburgh Courier, Cleveland Call and Post, and others all contain records of the opinions of the black community regarding the war, and the accomplishments of black soldiers.

Hi. Your answer is in black and white and while you say “people of color”, there was no explanation of what happened with other “people of color”.

Were there Asian platoons, Hispanic platoons, Indian platoons, Native Indian Platoons, etc? Or were just “blacks” separated and everything else became “white”.
