Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:
Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history
Newly published books and articles you're dying to read
Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now
Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes
...And so on!
Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.
Aspiring medieval nerd here! Any good reads on:
especially in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France.
I’m also very interested in major “plot twists” during the Middle Ages—that is, moments a surprise event like an unexpected death or an unexpected victory in battle changed the course of history. I so appreciate your help (and this sub in general).
I'm going to Athens in two weeks so I'd like to read a general book (or two) about Ancient Greece. I checked the book list on the side bar and there are three on the general section but only two are available for the kindle. The Osborne book is too expensive (~20USD for a 200 page book) so I was thinking on getting the Cartledge book. These are the results for Kindle books on Amazon. Anything below 10USD that you would recommend? Is there a book similar to Beard's SPQR?
I'm an astrophysicist so I'm also open to suggestions to books about the classical philosophers/mathematicians/astronomers.
My husband just finished the podcast History of Rome and loved every single minute. He seems interested in knowing more about Carthage and the Carthaginian Empire.
I'm looking for a book that is accessible for a non historian whose knowledge background of the time is just the podcast. Thanks for the recommendations!!
I'm looking for books on court etiquette or royal courts in general, something along the lines of Elias' The Court Society and Jeroen Duindam's books on royal courts in early modern Europe. Open to any region and time period.
I'm looking for a good book on comparative religion, preferably something easily read by a layman. I understand its a very broad subject, so I'm looking for something that's a good introduction to it.
Any book recommendations for Bronze Age and Iron Age Ireland, as well as on the Bronze Age-Iron Age transition? I'm working on my senior thesis so any help would be hugely appreciated!
Any books on Japanesr involvment in Indonesia any period? I'll take anything, from Pre-modern to WWII, to present-day involvments by either the state or businesses.
A large chunk of this sub consists in quoting books from subject matter experts. Is there an easy way for someone to get access to those texts in order to get the knowledge in order to answer questions? Sci-hub is not easy to navigate.
Need books about the ending time period of Muslim Spain. Like From the Second Taifa Period to the Fall of Granada.
Hey all!
I've been nibbling on Japanese history over the years through various media -- some college courses, podcasts and the like. I'm particularly interested in the Meiji era, but I'm specifically trying to find some resources about the colonization/subjugation/consolidation of Japanese power in Hokkaido and the Ryukyu Islands. Sources that cover when Yamato people began to settle in those areas, interactions with the indigenous groups, as well as general discussions of Japanese state formation from this standpoint of ethnicity/colonization would be awesome. Thanks much in advance!
