Hey guys, I was wondering if you might be able to help me solve a certain issue I'm having. I am trying to find any sources about the population of Ethiopia in the 14th century and the size of its military under Emperor Amda Seyon. I have found no sources that give even an estimate on how many soldiers medieval Ethiopia could raise. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know if he's covered the specific issue you're interested in, but I would check out the publications of Professor Michael Gervers of the University of Toronto: the only English-language specialist in medieval Ethiopia I can think of who is currently living (though emeritus). He's a really nice guy, so, if you can't find what you're looking for, he probably wouldn't mind you sending him an e-mail. Happy hunting.
