There isn't really a historical answer to this, you are just misunderstanding how language works.

Languages aren't like sports team affiliations. People do not generally convert to a new language because it is popular or influential. Individuals might choose to learn a second language because they think the language is useful, but communities don't generally convert their language en masse.
