Listening to an audio version of the "History of Rome" by Cassius Dio. he says the Latins used the word Dictator because they did not like term "King". How did the title dictator come to be viewed as negative?
Quick qualifying question, are you referring to negative connotations in the Republic that lead to the haitus of the position being used from 200BC until Sulla in 88BC or are you also considering 20th Century "dictators" who used the title but were wholly different entities?
