In WWII, how aware were average PFCs in the Pacific/Japan of the atomic bomb (and its development)?

The average US soldier anywhere wouldn't have known anything about its development. It was kept extremely secret, very deliberately so.

After the use of the bomb on Hiroshima, it was no longer a secret and news spread very quickly. But prior to that, unless they were associated with the bomb project they were not meant to know anything about it.
