Were there any casualties or injuries on the ground as a result of the Challenger explosion?

Speaking in regards to the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion in 1986.

No, it was far enough over the water at the time of the explosion, and the debris trajectory continued in a direction away from land. The area around the launch site was closed to commercial airline traffic at the time of the launch (this was routine); it remained closed after the accident. Whether the area of the sea was closed to traffic or not I’m not sure, but there were no boats in the area that were reported to have been hit.

Debris fell for about an hour after the explosion. The Coast Guard kept the sea and airspace closed until they could proceed without danger to conduct rescue and recovery operations.
