When I was a kid, the year 2000 seemed impossibly far into the future. Now /r/AskHistorians is telling me that it's a historical time period now. I feel old. :(

22.1k retweets and 144k likes at this point for a tweet that reads; "I was 23 years old when I realized " who let the dogs out" is a song about ugly bitches in the club, not letting actual dogs out." This tweet was made 10 days ago.

The original author of the sing has this to say about the meaning of the lyrics;

"Who Let the Dogs Out?" was written by Trinidadian artist Anslem Douglas, who originally recorded it under the title "Doggie".

Douglas himself admitted that the song has nothing to do with dogs and actually has a feminist theme. In an interview that was published on his website, he said: "It's a man-bashing song. I'll tell you why. The lyric of the song says, 'The party was nice, the party was pumpin'.' When I said the word 'party' I was being metaphorical. It really means things were going great. The 'Yippie-Yi-Yo,' that's everybody's happy, right? 'And everybody was having a ball.' Life was going great. 'Until the men start the name-callin' / And then the girls respond to the call.' So the men started calling the women 'skank' and 'skettel,' every dirty word you can think of. The men started the name-calling and then the girls respond to the call. It is ironic that someone would say that the song is about "ugly bitches in the club" when it is actually about them - the name-calling, trash-talking ass.

Finally, I think I have an answer. Who let the dogs out? We all do when we allow any other human to name call and trash talk another. Put the dogs back in their pen by standing up for your fellow humans when another is putting them down.

I definitely argued over it with a kid I knew, but I didn't actually quite understand what the reasoning for the millennium being on 2001 or 2000 was I very much lost. Which I wasn't totally happy about, as I was pretty sure it wasn't the kind of thing my dad would be wrong about, but as I said I didn't really understand his explanation.

Incidentally, I recently discovered that essentially no-one (other than the Kaiser) observed the start of the new century in 1900, which means that the 20th century in popular culture only lasted 99 years.

Ah, y'see, the trick is it's not saying "the two hundred and second decade" it's saying "the 20s" ie any year in which if you only look at the last 2 digits (because those first 2 are so slow in changing no one cares) and start reading them as "twenty." No one in their right mind would argue that 30 is part of the 20s, because it start's "thirty" rather than "twenty"

Unrelated, but this reminds me of the rule in my high school American history class. Our final essay topics couldn't be anything that happened in the last 10 years, which meant that none of us could write about 9/11, but the students in the year right after us could.
