• Gies, Frances & Joseph. Life in a Medieval Village. London: Harper Collins, 1990 : This is really a beginner level book (the Gieses are not academic historians), so while being very readable and accessible introduction of the rural life in the 13th century England, this book might well include some mistakes from the latest academic standpoint.
• Harvey, Barbara. The Twelfth And Thirteenth Centuries: 1066 - c. 1280. Oxford: OUP, 1998. Short Oxford History of the British Isles: would be the my no. 1 recommendation, and the real strong point of this series is its appendix section, including Time Table and glossary for some basic historical terms.
• Dyer, Christopher. Making a Living in the Middle Ages: The People of Britain, 850-1520. New Haven & London: Yale UP, 2002: offers an academic but highly readable overview of socio-economic history of medieval England.
• Crick, Julia & Elisabeth van Houts (eds.). A Social History of England 900-1200. Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 2011 & Rosemary Horrox & W. Mark Ormrod (eds.). A Social History of England 1200-1500. Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 2006: These two books are written as latest academic overview of medieval England, comprising of individual topic-based chapters written respectively by the specialists in each topic.
