I'm watching this colorized Netflix doc on wwii which is great. A lot of people, especially in the North African episode, are holding and firing their rifles upside down. Why?

The film depicts people firing a rifle upside down both from stationary, seemingly defensive positions, as well as running out in the open. I thought at first maybe just the positioning of one guy led him to do this to achieve better cover and/or line of sight, but then it happens a few more times.
