Lapu Lapu one of the national heroes of the Philippines

by Kaezumi

I eventually wondered around the culture of the Philippines, and I came across this national hero as Lapu-Lapu. I don't know but my take into this is that he ain't a national hero since from my point of perspective the concept Philippines was not created yet in his era or time-period, so I think he was merely fighting for his village against the Spaniard colonizers. What are your opinions about this certain topic?

Actually, the Philippines doesn't have a national hero. While several people were nominated for that status in 1995 by the National Heroes Committee (formed by Executive Act 75), Lapu Lapu was not one of them. There was no official selection from the committee, though in the Philippines most consider Jose Rizal to be the national hero.

That said, Lapu Lapu is seen as the first Filipino hero by many. For better or for worse, the Spanish colonization of the Philippines came to shape the identity of the country and the culture of its people and Lapu Lapu's fight with Ferdinand Magellan came to be a symbol of where it all began.
