In the Middle Ages, Charlemagne was given the title Imperator Augustus, which was the title given to Ancient Roman emperors. Did the people of Charlemagne’s time know who Augustus was?

Concerning western Europe, scholars like Alcuin or important persons like bishops or high born nobles definitly. The common people not at all (they knew their lord, maybe the lord over their lord but not further for most people), but nobody cared about common people at the time.

Concerning eastern Europe it is another story. Because the empire roman still existed there. The coronation of Charlemagne by the Pope in year 800 is seen as a MAJOR problem, maybe more important than what we called Schism in 1054 (it was a fact a first schism from the Pope). If the Pope crowned Charlemagne it was in the intention to avoid the imperial authority from Constantinople which was really intolerant, and in order to find another protecter since the Exarchate of Ravenne had collapsed. Moreoever since Irene had taken the title of Emperor from his son (by taken his eyes away) the west considered that no Emperor existed in 797 because from their point of view a woman couldn't exercise this charge (from an eastern roman point of view, a woman could be an Emperor). The sole idea that the Pope could make someone Augustus was horrific to them, cause it's only God who is able to chose an Emperor, no mortal power can do that. Constantinople never recognized Charlemagne as Emperor, even if the Emperor Irene tried to marry him. To finish 800 is miles stone in History cause this act has changed the world forever, diplomatically, religiously and politically. The main effect is it had started a one way road to the seperation into remained of the Pentarchy between the Pope and Patriarch of Constantinople, with several event (Schism of 867, schism of 1054) that really ended in 1204, the moment from when it was impossible to reconciliate both Churches into one Christian mouvment.
