I recently came across this family coat of arms. I wasn't able to find anything online and I think any information would be in Italian (which I don't know).
Does anyone have any information regarding the coat of arms or any history of the Delceppo name? And the phrase at the end of the first line: conti de Bayrols or count of Bayrols. I wasn't able to find anything about that or about Bayrols. Any information would be appreciated.
Hiya, I'm a hobby-genealogist from the Netherlands, currently doing some minor research into my own family heritage in the Low Countries and North Germany.
First of all this is a really interesting crest, last name, and predicament in terms of genealogical research. Let me preface what follows by stating that most of these suggestions are experience-based and likely in violation of the rules of this subreddit. Since it'll likely get taken down feel free to contact me personally if you're interested in sparring any further.
So I recently found out my Dutch family wears a German signet ring, with a coat of arms quite simply copied from an older noble family, having adopted this coat of arms towards the late 19th century. The main reason seems to have been the desire to distinguish the family name from its lower- and middle-class origins when the family came into money as a result of several trade ventures between ca. 1850 and 1886. As yet there is no legal connection between that noble crest and my bourgeois family that we have been able to prove.
In the bigger picture this adopting of coats of arms to distinguish ones family seems to have been a quite widespread practice in the Low Countries, where 'nobility' had not survived as well as it did for example in Spain, the UK, or Germany. To my knowledge Italy similarly had weaker traditions of nobility - especially in the North- due to the longtime presence of a rich middle-class since early modernity. My first suggestion is hence to figure out if there are any other artefacts that bear the coat of arms, and figure out how these objects are related to the family name.
Having said that, it is also possible to start out your research on the other end of the issue, namely by first building a theory on the basis of the information currently known to you.
As things stand you know the family name, its original commune in Italy (Chieri, vicinity of Turin), and a possibly county it held by the name of 'Bayrols'. As far as I could find, Bayrols does not exist according to Google, but then again it might be a linguistic issue. If indeed the Del Ceppo's originated in Chieri 'Bayrols' seems to be awfully close to Barolo (of fine wine fame), though it does not seem to have been a county of sorts.
The final hint of interest is that the placate states that the Del Ceppo family is from Palermo, Sicily. Related to its other origins in Chieri it is probably of great use figuring out what brought the family to Sicily. Depending on the timeframe there could be a plethora of reasons for such a move ranging from business to magistracy. Figuring this out will help you anchor your overall research.
As for resources, I'm not sure where you're writing from, but most countries have archival services and genealogical bureaus that could assist you with this type of research, however at a cost.
I'm pretty invested now so I'm curious to see where you take it from here!
