Job market for public history?

by Onedirection32

What's the job market like for public history? Is it as bad as academia/trying to become a professor, or is it different?

Public History is home to many subfields and jobs. So, your number of opportunities will correlate to how flexible you are, in terms of what kinds of jobs you are willing to do. I have dabbled in archives, museum work, historic preservation, planning, and cultural resources management. If you are willing to build a well-rounded resume showing you are a specialist in this field while also being versatile, you should be able to find good options. However, public history simply does not pay well, generally speaking, but you can increase your take home pay if you are willing to do some non-history-related work (especially in environmental consulting and planning. (Speaking from work experience and obtaining an MA in Public History).
