While the elite units of the SS like LSSAH, Das Reich, and Death’s Head get a lot of attention as “elite units”, they only made up a small portion of the SS. Many SS units were either conscripts, police or garrison units, or foreign national units. Looking at a few like SS Grenadier Division Galicia, Hitlerjugend, and Wiking which all varied in strength and skill.

Galicia was a Ukrainian national division that was raised up after Ukraine was conquered. While an SS Grenadier division, it’s role was to patrol and deal with anti partisan actions in the rear and never saw front line action until late 43-44. During the reconquering of Ukraine, Galicia got it’s first taste of action. Unfortunately it stood no chance against the Russians and most of the unit was either killed or captured. 3500 survivors reformed into a unit and was sent to Yugoslavia. By the end of the war the unit was interned in Italy, the Pope would save them from being extradited to the Soviet Union by claiming they were: “anti communist and good catholic man”. These men would resettle in the UK and Canada later.

The Hitlerjugend SS division was a unit mostly made up of young men straight out of the Hitler Youth and put into this unit. Alongside veterans of the LSSAH to lead the unit, this would be a new Panzer division ready for the Normandy campaign. However their first experience in battle was lackluster. The dug in and experienced Canadian and British units threw back the Hitlerjugend every time and the unit suffered greatly. Their lack of tactics and experienced caused such high casualties for little gains. Their experience in the Ardennes offensive would be the same.

Wiking was an SS Panzer division that did well throughout the war up until the Soviet invasion of Ukraine. This was made up of “anti-communist” men in the Nordic countries who volunteered. The unit was present during Barbarossa, Winter Storm, Kursk and Kharkov. During the Ukrainian offensives the unit was trapped in the Korsun pocket. The unit trapped and cutoff decided to bail out of their tanks and leave most of their heavy equipment and try to get back to their lines. While about half of their unit got back intact, the rest of their equipment was left behind alongside suffering heavy casualties. Their unit effectiveness depends on your view of them during the German campaigns.

Honestly while much of their accomplishments are hyped up as being elite units, in the beginning they were unreliable in combat and as the war went on, many were just glorified police units.
