One interesting feature of books and movies set in Franco's Spain is how many of them use childhood and fantastic metaphors to approach the era - even after his ouster, when metaphor isn't needed for safety. I don't know if there's a link to the Latin American magical realist school that fed into this, but how did this technique become such a prominent trope for this era? (for example, Bruno Schultz aside, there doesn't seem to be an analogue for Nazi era literature)
