No, but there were over a thousand border incidents between the Soviets and Japanese up to 1939 that ranged from soldiers on one side of the river stealing fish from those on the other side to full-fledged battles with aircraft. The culmination of all of these conflicts was the battle of Khalkhin Gol, where a dispute over a section of the Manchukuo-Mongolian border snowballed into a full-fledged campaign that nearly saw the annihilation of the Japanese Kwantung Army.

The crushing defeat of the Kwantung Army left the Japanese Army and government afraid of the Soviets through the remainder of the war. A peace agreement was made between the Soviets and Japanese as a result of Khalkhin Gol that put an end to the border disputes, and the result in Japan was a major shift in their expansionist policy away from Siberia and toward Indochina and Indonesia.
