Although this isn't a question about history I thought there wouldn't be a much better place to ask this question than here. So, as someone who is going to university in the fall to study history (at a very reputable uni here in the UK) the plausibility of making a living from history has me worried. So, historians, any advice on how it will be best/possible to make my love my career?
Teaching History and other Social Studies classes in High School is what I did for eight years. Then 30 years of school administration and after retiring, substitute teaching mostly for History teachers for the BEST six years of my successful career. My brother, BA and MA in History, worked first as an archivist at the Eisenhower Library, then taught, unsuccessfully for a few years, got a degree in Library Science and did that until he retired. So there’s that! Best of everything my friend. Perhaps you will discover something new and exciting in college.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it's your goal to make it your career, you will find a job that has at least a little to do with history... Remember though that even if it doesn't work out, a history degree is far from useless. I have a History MA and work in software sales. People tend to appreciate the out-of-the-box thinking and analytical skills you learn during a history degree.
