The best starting point would probably be the classic "Death and Life of Great American cities" by Jane Jacobs. It's an easy and accessible read and a good introduction. Jacobs was a key figure in the urban discourse in the 50s and 60s in New York City. Check out her other works, too.

I personally would also recommend David Harvey "Rebel Cities". This is a more sociopolitical then historical view on the topic, though.
