How did the syncretic nature of Chinese society (people believing in Taoism, Bhuddism, and Folk religion all at once) interact with the materialist certainty of Maoist-Marxist thought?

In my Chinese history class, one of the things that was emphasized was that people in medival China could believe multiple contradictory things about the nature of the universe. Also the nature of knowledge in Bhuddist tradition is more uncertain and less willing to delineate the inherent nature of things.

I was wondering how Mao reconciled (or surpressed) this kind of thinking with the teleology of dialectical materialism that says that the inherent nature of people and capital is knowable and we should make decisions based on that knowledge

This is such a complicated issue that I am not equipped to answer. However, I can give a few examples to mimic the feelings people get.

1.Knowing that Santa is not real does not stop people from celebrating Christmas.

2.the horrible things happened to Native Americans do not stop people from celebrating Thanksgiving.
