According to all-knowing wikipedia, there is no historical evidence for Black Caesar, the African pirate who assailed the Floriday Keys in the 18th century. How far back can we trace the legend, then? What are the earliest sources that talk about him?
This is hands down my favorite piece of Keys folklore. I just love the story of Black Caesar.
But I thought there was evidence of him being real. Wasn’t there proof that he was hanged by the British in Virginia for piracy after he was captured? From there I thought you could reasonably find evidence that showed that the stories about him were at least somewhat true.
