The advent of nuclear war popularized the post-apocalyptic genre. However, there are examples like Joseph Gandy's paintings that are older. Do we have any classical or medieval examples? Did any Romans speculate on life after Rome?

I was looking at Joseph Michael Gandy's painting of the ruins of London, and it hit me that this is perhaps the only example of creative work that I know of that can be categorized as post-apocalyptic but older than the Cold War era. Are there older?
