Since no has attempted to answer this question I will give it a shot. I can answer this question from a theological perspective, but not a historical one. The reason is due to the covenant Abraham made with the lord where him and all of his descendants must be circumcised. When it began was with Abraham 21 generations detached from Adam, and 42 generations before the coming of Jesus.

Genesis 17:9-14
Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come. 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. 12 For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant. 14 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”

In Islam and Judaism to uphold Abraham’s covenant with the Lord circumcision is required. That’s why it was widely regarded as a tradition in Judaism and Islam because it is required. Now you may be asking if it’s in Judaism and Islam why isn’t it required in Christianity? The answer is because with the coming of Jesus it was no longer needed for salvation. Also many of the new converts to Christianity were gentiles and not descendants of Abraham which the covenant did not require them to be circumcised.

Galatians 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
