FYI if you are not familiar with Sauer's argument - basically he states that from the years 1492-1520 "Old World" diseases like smallpox, influenza, and malaria were not killing millions; rather the diseases that felled Caribbean peoples such as the Taino were sanitation diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. Those diseases were specifically caused by the unsanitary construction of what can only be described as concentration camps in order to give Spanish access to labor for the gold mines.

I find Sauer's argument to be very compelling. But the book was written in 1966 so perhaps more research has been done?
