African historians of African history

by endymionspenis

I was looking at the Introduction to African history course at SOAS and all the books recommended were by white men. Are there any good introductions to African history that are by actual Africans?

I wrote this answer several months ago, specifically about West African history. It has a few suggestions that should get you started.

Edit- also, there's the UNESCO general history of Africa. The series was published from 1964-1999, so the first few volumes are quite old. However, a new volume is coming out this year, and two more are forthcoming. The UNESCO series was quite good about including African scholars.
