I know from previous questions here that the aesthetic regarding the quality and design of their uniforms was based on the choice of the commander. This commander was a noble who bought a commission. I also know that cavalry was typically composed of the nobility, or otherwise wealthy, at least previously in history.

Without nobility, how did the US organize its cavalry?
