im writing a big school assignment about fandom culture with a focus on the Star Trek fandom in the 60s but I need some history sources about the socioeconomic changes before and in the 60s that led to the creation of fandom culture to be possible. I already know most of what I want from the source (middle class got more money and free time, more technology like tvs becoming common items etc). my history teacher unfortunately isn't much help and im going to the library tomorrow and plan to ask the librarians for help then.
Since your end goal is to do something regarding fan studies I would suggest several sources in that particular vein instead of a broad overview of the socioeconomics in the 1960's. Fan studies is a (relatively) new field that is growing very quickly and you may find articles that speak to your topic better than one that does not engage with the subject directly that you then have to contextualize.
To start with, the Journal of Transformative Works and Cultures is a peer reviewed journal whose focus is transformative works, ie fan created works. https://journal.transformativeworks.org/index.php/twc/issue/archive. They are a wonderful resource for anyone engaging in any type of fan studies.
There are also a few published collections out like Fandom, Second Edition: Identities and Communities in a Mediated World edited by Jonathan Gray, Cornel Sandvoss, and C. Lee Harrington, or Productive Fandom: Intermediality and Affective Reception in Fan Cultures by Nicolle Lamerichs whose first chapter "Shared Narratives: Intermediality in Fandom" is a review of the history of the field, a resource I would not dismiss for your purposes, since you can mine its citations for your needs.
Finally, and this is where I am sure the librarian will first point you, is JSTOR. Its archive is... immense and will allow you to cast a very wide net across a wide variety of academic journals that have published articles that deal with your subject from a variety of different viewpoints.
