I am a retired Roman soldier who has completed my term of service after the Marian Reforms had been implemented. I’ve been promised land and a pension. How would I find a plot of land to settle and collect my benefits? What if my benefits got cut off? Did I have to show I was not a fraud?

This is a question that runs to the actual administration of the army and logistics in an era where communication was not instantaneous and transportation was not instantaneous. How were salaries and pensions administered to legionaries and how did they keep track of all this information?

Under the Marian Reforms, enlistment in the Roman Army was opened to the landless classes. Legionaries were granted land after completing their period of service( 25 years) How many Legionaries would actually survive to complete their term? How many could the state afford to survive?
