Obviously this is touchy and I'm not trying to make a facile comparison between two historical events, but I'm always curious about how people handle this sort of thing. I know now that people are having more discussions about using the word genocide around the Trail of Tears, but I was curious, given certain events in Ottoman history, what's the common understanding of similar events in Turkey?
Never learned it during middle-school/high-school, as the focus was primarily on the Pre-Islamic Turkic empires and the Ottoman Empire. We know about the Native Genocide but it was never explained in detail. Most likely the university students studying at the Department of American Culture or any other department related to World History would learn it.
