I'd recommend "The Battle for China: Essays on the Military History of the Sino-Japanese War of 1937-1945" with Mark Peattie, Edward Drea and Hans van de Ven as editors. What this book is is collection of essays from scholars from Taiwan, China, and Japan that covers the conflict at a high level with some more granular studies. The point of it is to provide a more or less de-politicized account of the war as a jumping off point for future scholarship.

It's a bit dry, but I'm not sure there is much else out there in english besides what you've read already. It's a gap in the english historiography, no question.
