Were they elevated in some way or ignored? I’ve read that the crusaders slaughter when entering the city was indiscriminate. Did they spare the local Christians?

When the crusaders actually entered the city on July 15, 1099, no, they did not distinguish between Muslims, Jews, or local Christians at that moment. But soon enough, they were very interested in all the different Christian groups they found there, and local Christians had a relatively high status in crusader society. (Muslims and Jews, not so much.)
