Jeannette Rankin was elected in US Congress in 1917, while the Nineteenth Amendment who gave women the right to vote, passed on 1919, and was adopted on 1920.
My question is: Did Jeannette Rankin not vote for herself?
Women in Montana were granted suffrage by the state in 1914. Presumably, she voted for herself. She was certainly able to vote in that election. Without looking at voter rolls of the county where she lived, it is impossible to say if she actually voted, but it is highly doubtful someone as dedicated as she was wouldn’t have gone to the polls and voted for herself.
Rankin was active in the suffrage movement, and was also the first woman to speak to that state’s legislature.
