Why were the French so confident in the Maginot Line? What led them to think it was a good approach to heading off the Germans?

I always wondered why the French put so much stock into the Maginot Line. Were they unaware of how badly the blitzkrieg tactics would dominate them if they bypassed it? Were there any plans to deal with the German offensive should the wall fail, proposed or otherwise?
